A semiconductor laser with a two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice photonic crystal is developed. The photonic crystal slab, composed of InP and air holes, is embedded near an active layer by a wafer-fusion technique. Lasing oscillation and surface-emission reflecting the nature of the 2D square-lattice photonic crystal are successfully demonstrated.
