Traditionally, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) has been the go-to technology for Power Systems, utilizing unsynchronized and slow-rate remote terminal units in the field, often resulting in the oversight of crucial events. In recent times, phasor measurement units (PMUs), which provide synchronized and rapid reporting, have been introduced, leading to the emergence of Wide-Area Monitoring System (WAMS). However, the extension of WAMS to the distribution side of the power system has been a relatively recent development, spurred by the integration of active participants into the distribution grids. Consequently, utilities worldwide are actively working on the development and deployment of WAMS in distribution grids. However, they face techno-economic challenges stemming from fundamental differences between the transmission and distribution networks. This paper comprehensively explores recent strides and significant challenges in expanding WAMS to distribution grids. We provide both a qualitative and quantitative assessment of various advancements with a primary focus on an advanced architecture that integrates various metering systems and development & deployment of µLPMUs. Finally, we present a case study to demonstrate the impact of monitoring systems on centralized voltage control in renewable-rich distribution grid. In particular, it is showed that how measurement uncertainties lead to undesired control actions. This dual approach ensures a thorough understanding of the advancements and challenges associated with integrating WAMS into the dynamic landscape of distribution grids.
