In this paper the LDACS-based passive multistatic radar implementation is characterized and its performance capabilities are assessed in relation to the civil aviation surveillance guidelines. Firstly, the LDACS surveillance link budget is introduced and the limitations imposed by a bistatic operation on the system coverage and detection performance are evaluated. Following this, the multistatic radar extension and design features are introduced, and the associated detection performance is investigated. The simulation results clearly depict the significant improvement in coverage and detection probability, obtained already by simply extending a bistatic geometry with a few additional receivers.
