Summary form only given. A dual-purpose vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), or vertical-cavity optoelectronic component (VCOC), with identical lasing and detection regions has been described previously for use in "ping-pong" communications applications. In the report, we focus on the new approach, where separate regions of light emission and detection are created on the VCSEL aperture. The motivation for the separation of the regions is to allow separate optimisation for the two functions and we report the first demonstration of such a device to the best of our knowledge.
