The present work demonstrates the passive Q-switching of a diode-pumped Er:Yb:glass mini-laser by a new crystal saturable absorber: (/spl sim/001%)Co/sup 2+/:ZnSe, without intracavity focusing. The primary advantage of Co:ZnSe Over U-doped materials is its much higher absorption cross-section.
