The trend towards integrating functions in advanced avionics systems fielded by the Air Force is having a profound impact on the way data is managed and used in those systems. To develop innovative data management approaches that are needed for future and upgraded Air Force systems, Wright Laboratory initiated the Functionally Integrated Resource Manager (FIRM) Program. This paper describes trends in avionics data management, integrated avionics architectures and software, their database impact, and system-level approaches to database management developed under the FIRM Program. Using sensor fusion and integrated sensor management as examples, object-oriented approaches, issues, and tradeoffs to managing shared data in advanced avionics systems, are discussed.<>
