Modular Open Systems Approaches (MOSA) to avionics and mission systems development and operations are becoming accepted as necessary and desired to lower costs, development times, and barriers to innovation while maintaining or improving flight safety. This paper reports on the results of a decade-long research and development project resulting in a MOSA framework that makes significant progress in all four objectives. We provide an overview of the key design principles that enabled this effort and a brief summary of future work.
