Due to its potential to improve spectral efficiency and coverage, cell-free massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology has attracted a lot of attention in the field of cellular communication systems. The performance of cell-free massive MIMO operating in Nakagami fading channels is investigated in this work. This work specifically focuses on assessing the effectiveness of distributed versus centralized operations for the uplink and downlink transmissions. In the uplink scenario, analyze theefficiency of channel estimation and user detection techniques under both centralized and distributed architectures. Meanwhile, for the downlink transmission, investigating the impact of centralized versus distributed precoding strategies on the achievable rates and system throughput. Through extensive simulations which provide insights into the trade-offs between centralized and distributed approaching in terms of system performance metrics such as achievable data rates, spectral efficiency, and energy efficiency. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the optimal operation modes for cell-free massive MIMO systems in Nakagami fading channels, thereby facilitating the design of efficient and reliable communication networks for future wireless applications.
