Reduction of photorefractivity in Hf:LiNbO/sub 3/ crystals is demonstrated to be due to increased photoconductivity; threshold value of HfO/sub 2/ doping is found to be 4 mol %. Heating effects must be carefully considered for measurements interpretation.
