Summary form only given. Recently, the transmission of eight 40-Gbit/s time-division multiplexed (TDM) channels over 240-km standard single-mode fiber (SMP) was reported. The potential for further system upgrade of dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems with 40-Gbit/s TDM channels, however, has not yet been investigated. We show by numerical simulations, that the performance of N/spl times/40 Gbit/s dispersion-managed WDM systems over embedded SMF at 1.55 /spl mu/m is only limited by the interaction of nonlinear self-phase modulation (SPM) and dispersion of the individual channel.
