Summary form only given. We will present the measured VUV transmission and F/sub 2/ laser induced fluorescence of a number of samples of Nd:LaF/sub 3/, Nd:YLF, Tb:YLF, and Ho:YLF. Of these, the LaF/sub 3/ in particular appears to exhibit significant absorption at the Nd:LaF/sub 3/ laser wavelength, and we shall discuss the possible causes of this loss as well as attempts to eliminate it. We will also present the preliminary results of experiments to measure the optical gain in a number of rare-earth doped trifluorides.<>
