The multi-stage interband cascade laser (ICL) represents a fundamentally new class of semiconductor coherent IR source. Numerical simulations predict that it will combine the advantages of low threshold currents, high operating temperatures, and high output powers at wavelengths from 2.5 /spl mu/m to 7 /spl mu/m. Similar to the intersubband quantum cascade laser (QCL), electrons are recycled in the ICL so that the maximum number of photons emitted for every injected electron is not limited to one but is instead the total number of periods in the structure.
