Experiments and simulations have demonstrated a new technique for priming and mode-locking magnetrons by defining the spatial regions of electron emission of a cathode. For an N-cavity magnetron, pi-mode priming is accomplished by fabricating cathodes with N/2-azimuthal strips of electron emission to pre-bunch and maintain the desired number of electron spokes.
