An optical pattern or character recognition operation may consist of matching either amplitudes, or phases, or both, The amplitude-modulated phase-only filter (AMPOF), in particular, effectively utilizes both amplitude and phase information to obtain a narrower and larger autocorrelation peak. However, as with any continuous-valued filters, the AMPOF function is not readily suitable for real-time pattern recognition operation. Accordingly, the amplitude and phase of the AMPOF are respectively ternarized and binarized to yield an improved performance statistics of the correlator.<>
