This article present a design methodology and optimization of a 20/16 outer rotor-five-phase switched reluctance motor (OR-FPSRM) for in-wheel drive applications. The analytical model to estimate the static torque for the OR-FPSRM has been derived. The proposed model depends solely on the geometry parameters, making it highly suitable for design optimization. The motor design process includes mathematical modeling, optimization, CAD modeling, and finite element analysis. The genetic algorithm for optimization has been used, considering the stator pole arc angle, phase current, number of turns, bore diameter, and stack length as optimization variables. The torque density and copper losses serve as objective functions governing the optimization. The optimized motor model is analyzed using ANSYS Maxwell. Comparison results between static finite element analysis solutions and the derived analytical model are presented. Additionally, presented results for performance parameters such as torque, speed, and current waveform.
