Increasing speed in data communications as well as in telecommunication switching systems and the trend to networks with distributed computing, shared memory systems etc. require high density interconnection links with high data throughput, low crosstalk, and low power consumption. We report on the performance of multi-channel parallel optical interconnection links with fiber-ribbon cables and electrical connectors on both sides. The links are dc-coupled, the total data throughput is up to 24 Gbit/s (12/spl times/2 Gbit/s). All the optoelectronic components are mounted inside the connector housings. They are realised as 12 channel arrays of 250 /spl mu/m pitch.
