Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) has been attracting a lot of attention in wireless communication and automobile industries in the recent years. VANET as a new wireless technology use wireless access devices such as IEEE 802.11p to establish connectivity between vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure. This novelty in wireless communication assures to hugely improve road safety, increase efficiency and prove sustainable transport system in the nearest future via Intelligent Transportation system (ITS) development. Hence, the ongoing research projects on several areas of VANET among government organizations, automobile industries and academia on establishment of standards for VANETs. The deployment of VANET applications such as collision alerting system and traffic awareness dissemination system have made VANET an area of great research interest when it comes to wireless communication. This research paper covers the state of VANET, research issues and the possibilities of VANET in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
