Presents the cockpit of the MB-2, the first US-designed bomber to be procured in quantity; it is post World War I. General William (Billy) Mitchell used one of these bombers to sink three ships off of the Virginia Capes in 1921. Those trials demonstrated the concept of aerial bombardment and highlighted the vulnerability of naval vessels to attack from the air. This cockpit reflects early 1920s technology. The large control wheel was the result of the completely manual, unboosted, cable and pushrod control systems of the era. Note that the cockpit had no windscreen. We are indebted to Code One Magazine, published by the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company for permission to bring this historic photograph to you. It is one of a series of 32 - all from the perspective of the pilot's eye - contained in their First Quarter 2007 issue. The Code One team that assembled this issue included Photojournalist John Rossino, Associate Editor Jeff Rhodes, and Editor Eric Hehs.
