Electric vehicle is a good solution to energy crisis and environment pollution. More specifically, low speed electric vehicle, whose speed is often lower than 50 km/h, is widely used for short-distance transportation in suburban areas. As the key part of electric vehicle, motor assumes an important position in the performance of the vehicle. To discuss the motor adequate for low speed application, two typical motors, which includes a brushless DC motor (BLDCM) and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), were selected and compared in this article by both experimental and finite element analysis methods.
