The development of advanced active matrix liquid crystal displays is described. The displays are formed from single crystal silicon, and have integrated on-board scanner circuitry for row and column addressing. The display diagonal is 5 cm, and pixel pitch as low as 12 /spl mu/m is under development. Operational 640 by 480 displays are described, and initial results with 1280 by 1024 displays are reported.<>
