The insatiable demand for higher bandwidth in optical communication systems and newly emerging various non-communication applications of VCSELs are spurring the development of VCSELs with higher performances and functions. In this presentation, we will describe recent advances of VCSEL technology at GIST in terms of operation speed, single transverse mode operation, polarization stabilization, and output beam shaping. The developed VCSELs have unique features that have been gradually implemented for high performance systems, such as optical interconnects, miniature atomic clocks, gas sensors, and bio-sensors.
