We have demonstrated a monolithically integratable GaAs-AlGaAs rib waveguide mode expander that requires only epitaxial growth, lithography and conventional etching to fabricate. Our device has demonstrated losses of 2.5 dB and we project has the potential to further reduce the fiber to semiconductor waveguide loss to below 1 dB.
