The concept of opaque network is introduced in the case of meshed network and it is shown that the concepts of wavelength path and virtual wavelength path routing strategies introduced in the case of transparent networks have to be revised for the opaque network. Particular attention will be devoted to the function of opto-electronic wavelength converters.
