Specialty fibers are defined as optical fibers designed to have a special function different from standard telecommunication fibers. Today, almost all specialty fibers are manufactured by the silica-based fiber technique because only silica-based glass can provide practical performance for the fibers. This paper reviews the current status of specialty fibers such as polarization maintaining fibers, image transmission fibers, anti-environment fibers like radiation resistant fibers, and so on.
