Different technologies and systems have been proposed for the safety of taxicab drivers. Of these, a global positioning system (GPS)-based tracking systems has attracted the attention of taxi commissions. The reasons include the compact size of GPS receivers, the low cost of GPS receivers, 24 hour GPS operation in all weather conditions anywhere on the earth. Very similar GPS-based tracking systems can be used for fleet/dispatch operations. Both systems are described.
