In conclusion we have demonstrated the generation of 0.7 ps light pulses by hybrid mode locking of a commercial semiconductor laser at 1.3 /spl mu/m. Detuning towards shorter wavelengths is found to be crucial for obtaining ultrashort pulses. A theoretical analysis shows that this detuning compensates for the bandgap reduction due to many body interactions.<>
