The Optical Disc Corporation (ODC) DRAW mastering process, which is based on dye-polymer technology, is well suited for generation of masters compliant to the DVD format and has fewer steps than that of the photoresist mastering process. Several replicas which comply to the DVD physical format were generated at 4/spl times/ standard CD data rates and mastering conditions were selected which produce all measured electrical signals within the DVD specifications (of January l996). The dye-polymer pits are smooth and are characterized by surrounding rims. The achievable electrical signals are comparable to those of photoresist technology. The smoother and less deep pits of the dye-polymer, however, permit easy release of the stamper from the molded replica with reduced probability of damaging the replica pits. This, in conjunction with the closed-loop control of the DRAW mastering system, allows for a DVD mastering process with high throughput and yield.
