The technologies, functions, and innovations which are likely to be incorporated into late 1990s commercial aircraft are reported, together with possible integration approaches. The author discusses integrated modular avionics within the context of controls and data transfer, power distribution and management, and cockpit navigation and sensing equipment. The optical propulsion management system (OPMIS) is described, as is the autonomous operations optical integration concept.<>
