Roundabouts are commonly used in many countries as a form of intersection control. Although Japan formally adopted the conventional definition and operating policies of many overseas countries for roundabouts in 2013, drivers still feel confused about signs and traffic rules because of lack of understanding and education about the revision of rules. This study attempts to provide a comparison of traffic performance at pre- and post- 2013 roundabouts in Japan by computer simulation based on traffic flow data and speed profiles of vehicles using a single-lane roundabout in a residential area. The investigation indicates that most speeds of vehicles from both major and minor roads declines to less than 30 km/h as they enter the roundabout and drive around it. The second part of the study investigates estimated delay and queue length values by using a simulation technique. The results show comparatively lower values for average delay and queue length in the post-2013 roundabouts. This research work can reinforce lessons for transportation professionals about the viability of simulation as an analysis method and also show that conventional roundabout rules yield superior traffic performance with high flow conditions whereas previous unconventional rules ae able to perform well only in low traffic demand situations.
