The field of cooperatively interacting vehicles requires complex simulation infrastructures dealing with various aspects such as vehicle, traffic, and communication models. In this work we present a modular and extensible simulator architecture, design patterns, and best practices for this domain. We show how extension points for co-simulators can be employed allowing the engineer to tailor a simulation environment to his needs. Moreover, we introduce the sectoring approach distributing the computational burden of a simulation over a series of workers thereby allowing us to cope with a large number of participants residing in large urban areas.
