Today's original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers face the seemingly conflicting goals of reducing development time while improving quality, and reducing system complexity while delivering technical innovations. To meet these challenges, design engineers are increasingly reliant on embedded software solutions to deliver innovative functionality. Luxury vehicles produced today contain as many as 90 embedded electronic control units (ECUs) that use four different network protocols and execute binary code generated from over 6 million lines of source code (MLOC). Even economy vehicles can contain as many as 50 ECUs that deliver mission-critical, distributed, embedded software systems.
