The potential of photonic crystals as well as critical issues using different passive devices like straight and curved waveguides and filters are discussed. Examples of active photonic crystal based devices with different designs based either on a ridge waveguide with PhCs at the end facets or on full PhC approaches (PhCs used for lateral waveguiding as well as for end facets) are presented. These include, for example, InP based microlasers. In order to obtain single-mode operation, photonic crystal intracavity mirrors have been implemented, permitting a sidemode suppression ratio of over 35 dB. Lasers based on coupled defect cavities formed in photonic crystals are presented. Results on integration of passive and active waveguides are reported.
