It is commonly agreed that alternative PNT services will play an increasing role in the future ATM. The threat from RFI, in the form of GNSS jamming and/or spoofing, is not easily quantifiable. Many authors have described its impact on systems, on the safety and efficiency of operations and many other perspectives; a quantitative assessment of the threat, however, remains elusive. As such, it seems self-evident that an alternate means of navigation will be required for future aviation users of GNSS-based services. The value of Solution 81 lies precisely in the further development of a set of technologies that have, in the past, shown strong potential for enabling that alternate capability, which is likely to support even the most demanding RNP types, like RNP-0.3.
