The stimulated Raman backscattering instability (BSRS) and second harmonic generation (SHG) that occurs in an ultrashort (45 fs), intense (I>1/spl times/10/sup 17/ W/cm/sup 2/) laser pulse interaction with an optically ionized helium gas are presented.
