Spontaneous pulse repetition rate multiplication phenomena are observed in a stretched-pulse APM Er-fiber laser. With suitable adjustment of the polarization controllers, the laser can switch between operating at the fundamental repetition rate as a stretched-pulse APM laser and operating at harmonic repetition rates (as high as 34) as a soliton laser.
