A new energy efficient control scheme for conventional scalar (v/f) control of induction motor (IM) drives is presented in this article. The scalar control scheme is generally employed in constant air-gap flux mode of operation in order to fulfill the maximum torque capability of IM at all the operating conditions. However, the aforementioned control scheme results in high stator current at light-load conditions, bringing down the efficiency of IM significantly. To overcome such a drawback, a new maximum-torque-per-ampere (MTPA) based control strategy for scalar control of IM drive is proposed in this article. The proposed control scheme enables the motor to operate at the point of minimum current regardless of the drive's operating conditions. In this regard, a unique expression for command voltage as a function of slip speed is developed. Non-requirement of any additional controller and current sensor for the implementation is the key feature of the proposed method. The proposed control strategy is very simple and easy to implement in scalar controlled IM drives and does not incur any additional cost of implementation. The overall scheme is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and experimentally validated in a 5.5 kW IM drive prototype.
