Noor Inayat Khan was born in Moscow to an aristocratic Indian family and, as a Sufi Muslim, was a pacifist. In Paris in the 1930s, where she became fluent in French, she wrote children's stories and studied the harp. As war loomed, her family fled to London, where she enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).
