Recent developments in high power rated Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) have resulted in their successful application in Multi-Terminal HVDC (MTDC) transmission systems and also have potential in the Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) distribution systems. A multi-zonal MVDC architecture has been identified by the US Navy as one of the possible architectures for the shipboard power distribution. Selection of a particular architecture for the shipboard power system will require extensive studies to be carried out with respect to various protection, control and stability issues. This paper presents the findings of small signal stability studies carried out on a zonal MVAC as well as a MVDC architecture for the ship board power distribution system.
