The state of the art in individually addressable VCSEL arrays, future developments and limitations are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the scalability of 2-D arrays and difficulties encountered when increasing the array size. Recently demonstrated high efficiency VCSELs with wallplug efficiencies above 50% promise to reduce heating induced limitations on the simultaneous operation of large 2-D arrays.
