Fires in road tunnels are potentially hazardous. In addition to the conventional fire detection methods, new detection methods using image processing technology with infrared or color cameras have been reported. This article points out the problems associated with conventional fire detectors, and reviews some of the new detection methods. In particular, a new image processing method which compares two histograms with various shades of gray level, obtained from video images of normal traffic flow and those of fires, is proposed for fire detection.<>
