The quantum-limited timing jitter of actively modelocked lasers is set by the balance between amplified spontaneous emission and restoring forces provided by modulation and optical filtering. We present theory and experimental results for a fiber laser and an external-cavity semiconductor laser. We also show a scheme for reducing timing jitter using GVD and phase modulation.
