Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) present many advantages over conventional edge-emitting lasers because of their unique structure. One of the most attractive properties of VCSELs is their single-longitudinal-mode operation due to their very short cavity. On the other hand, it is well known that a conventional edge-emitting semiconductor laser may exhibit many compound-cavity modes when it operates with external optical feedback. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the spectral characteristics of a VCSEL in the presence of optical feedback from an external reflecting mirror.
