The 2023 Italian Cluster Demonstration campaign, part of the SESAR U-ELCOME Project, highlighted the capabilities and interoperability of U-space services in Italy through structured trials. This project is centered on validating and showcasing U-space's operational capacity, particularly U1 and U2 services, across various environments. The Italian Cluster worked with several partners, including Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), Common Information Service Providers (CISPs), U-space Service Providers (USSPs), UAS operators, and manufacturers. These entities collaborated to build a U-space ecosystem ready to support the needs of both civil and commercial UAS operations, with specific focus areas like regulatory compliance, data exchange, and situational awareness. In the initial integration phase, the campaign aligned several technological systems to facilitate secure data exchange. Key components included the D-flight platform, the T-DROMES fleet management system, Honeywell Ground Control Stations (GCS), and TopView's Pollicino tracking device. The integration ensured that UAS mission planners, USSPs, and CNS monitoring systems could exchange information seamlessly. This setup was crucial for supporting both U1 and U2 services, such as e-registration, geofencing, flight authorization, and procedural interfaces with air traffic control. The campaign then moved into live trials, where both Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations were conducted in various urban, suburban, and rural locations throughout Italy. These trials demonstrated the platforms' interoperability and allowed for data collection across multiple operational scenarios. Flight metrics included 72 authorizations, 66 VLOS and 6 BVLOS flights, and over 930 minutes of flight time. During these demonstrations, the project's infrastructure proved effective, ensuring stable operations across diverse environments and validating U-space's role in expanding airspace utilization for UAS. Key achievements from the campaign include the successful handling of simultaneous operations and the establishment of reliable communication between platforms. For example, tests involving the T-DROMES mission management system and the D-flight platform showed that the U-space ecosystem could manage complex scenarios, including dynamic geo-fencing and situational updates. Feedback from participants noted high situational awareness and manageable workload levels, though some suggested improvements to HMI designs for enhanced user interaction and streamlined system access. Future phases of the U-ELCOME project will focus on integrating CISP platforms, advancing regulatory sandboxes near airports, and expanding U-space-designated airspace throughout Italy. This progression is intended to bridge the current testing phase with full U-space deployment, positioning Italy as a core player in harmonizing U-space standards and practices across Europe. The Italian Cluster's findings contribute essential insights into the safe integration of UAS into controlled airspace, paving the way for broader U-space applications..
