A method for the computation of synchronization failure rates in master-slave phase-synchronized first-order phase-locked loops (PLLs) is presented. The method assumes (propagation) delay times that are long compared with tracking loop time constants and allows system optimizations of the slaved PLL in terms of improved tracking performance. Frequency turnaround ratios of phase-coherent transponders are considered, and effects of the converted transponder phase jitter on the tracking performance of the slaved PLL are discussed.<>
