We discuss the state of the art in individually addressable VCSEL arrays including future developments and limitations. Special emphasis is given to the scalability of 2D arrays and difficulties encountered when increasing the array size. We present results on uniform, 8 x 8 top-emitting VCSEL arrays emitting at 960 nm, designed and fabricated as a component of a free-space optoelectronic interconnect within the SPOEC consortium of the Fourth European Framework MEL ARI Opto Cluster.
