This paper presents the requirements for pulse stability in harmonically modelocked semiconductor lasers. Results show that dynamic gain saturation is essential for the stability of harmonically modelocked semiconductor lasers. The precise limit for stable operation and design criteria for operation without pulse dropouts are also presented.
