Electric motors possessing high torque density are desired where space limitations restrict equipment footprint. Magnetic gears are being increasingly popular for integration with electric motors to step-up the torque density. Magnetic geared switched reluctance motors (SRM) with reduced rare-earth material are recently introduced. This paper presents the design and optimisation of a magnetic geared SRM. Taguchi’s method is employed for the optimisation process to reduce computation time. Torque compatibility between the gear and the motor where the two entities share a common magnetic circuit is discussed and a torque matching procedure between the motor and the gear is established. Finite element based simulation package is used for the simulations.
