Summary form only given. In this paper, in order to improve the sensitivity of an interferometric autocorrelator, we utilize a Si avalanche photodiode (APD) as the two-photon absorber for the first time to our knowledge. The sensitivity of 2 mW/sup 2/ is obtained with the help of the avalanche gain of the APD>1000. By using the newly developed autocorrelator, we demonstrate the measurement of the pulse width and chirp of optical pulses having low peak power, which are generated from an actively mode-locked external-cavity semiconductor laser at 1.55 /spl mu/m.
