From past decades, Smile remains as a common expression to express happiness in our daily life. A smile has the ability to bring out the basic hidden emotions, such as satisfaction and happiness. Smile detection is used in many applications such as automatic image capturing, distance learning systems, interactive systems, video conferencing, patient monitoring, and product rating. Smile detection system is mainly divided into two phase namely, features extraction and classification. So the accuracy of smile detection depends on both the phases. Numerous researchers and scholars have pointed out various approaches regarding smile detection in the recent years. This paper surveys the techniques used, results obtained and challenges faced by such approaches. Also, it compares their merits and limitations.
