Lightstic diffusing tip applicators have many important applications in minimally invasive surgical techniques. Photonic energy can now compete with less refined energy sources due to the recent drop in price of laser diode systems to the point where these systems are the smallest most cost effective energy sources available. The tiny size of the fiber that these sources can couple to uses the smallest possible amount of catheter cross sectional "real estate" that does not inhibit the catheters other functions. The use of fiber optic delivery is also compatible with other physiological sensing without interference. Laser energy can be delivered simultaneously with obtaining an MRI image, EKG, and fluoroscopic imaging.
